 The original one-piece cast wheel was scanned to faithfully capture its shape.  The necessary critical dimensions were collected from the center forging and rim suppliers.  Several 3-dimensional "sketch" models were created to finalize the overall look/feel of the design.
       
     
 This sketch model then became the template to create the engineering model in Solidworks.
       
     
 The Solidworks model then undergoes Finite Element Analysis (FEA), the results of which are used to optimize the design for strength/weight goals.
       
     
 The optimized model is then used to generate tool paths to CNC cut the wheel center from a raw forged aluminum blank.

Meshwerks was asked by a BMW enthusiast to create a custom 3-piece forged modular wheel design for his M-Coupe.  He liked the style of the OEM cast wheel but custom diameters, widths and backspacings weren't available.  Meshwerks scanned the center section of the BMW wheel and then modified it to fit within the envelope of an existing aluminum forging blank made by another supplier.
